Crossing the Border in Coverage

Univision’s América Latina desk picked up my 148-groups dataset for the largest Spanish-language news audience in the US, reorganized by state to foreground territorial concentration, the question this audience asks first.

A Different Reader, the Same Evidence

What makes this citation valuable is reach: a transnational readership different from Reforma’s or El País’s. My data crosses linguistic and political borders the way the violence it documents already does.

What the Article Reported

Univision named the largest actors driving territorial concentration: CJNG, Cártel del Pacífico, Cártel del Golfo, and Cártel de Sinaloa, dominant across Guerrero, Michoacán, Estado de México, and Mexico City. Instead of one cartel at a time, my data ran as a single comparative map.

State-by-state: Guerrero (24 groups), Michoacán (23), Estado de México (22), Ciudad de México (20), Baja California (16), Guanajuato (14), Quintana Roo (13), down to Zacatecas (5) and Jalisco (4), with Nayarit the lowest. The dispersion itself is a structural feature of the map.

“El CJNG es el grupo que más confrontaciones tiene con grupos rivales por el control del territorio dada su rápida expansión a partir de 2017 y su presencia en prácticamente casi todo México.” CJNG isn’t just present in many states, it’s the group most consistently in active conflict with others for territory, the mechanism by which violence spreads. For Univision’s US Latino audience: this violence has measurable structure, it isn’t confined to a few historically hot states.
