Grupos en las Sombras
This January 2022 interview on Las Noticias con Javier Alatorre (El Heraldo de México’s flagship news program) came days after emeequis ran an investigation citing my CIDE research: a database naming criminal organizations the Fiscalía General de la República had never acknowledged. I used the segment to place that finding in the debate over how the Mexican state defines and counts its criminal adversaries.
My core point: when the FGR doesn’t name a group, it can’t coordinate a response against it. I built the 148-group map to fill that gap, triangulating communiqués, banners, and press sourcing into a count the government itself hadn’t assembled. By 2022 the groups the FGR still wasn’t naming were the ones expanding fastest in contested territory.

Lo que la Fiscalía no Dice
Alatorre’s flagship slot gave my research a primetime audience. Three organizations acknowledged versus over a hundred documented isn’t a measurement gap, it’s a policy choice, with direct consequences for where resources, investigations, and prosecutions go. This is one of the clearest cases where I positioned my research as a counter-narrative to official silence.
